Amulet of Elusion (The Lost Amulet Chronicles, #1)
*Received a free copy in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis
[Young Adult/Fantasy/Adventure]

Alexa Costa has a life-altering secret…only she doesn’t know it yet.

Confined by law to the kingdom of Alvair until the age of eighteen, Alexa has lived a sheltered existence under the watchful eye of her sword-wielding guardian, Ivy. Her love interest, Caleb Whitman, is exactly the opposite. A merchant sailor and seeker of rare artifacts, Caleb has lived a life of adventure in nearby San Lucero, the long-time rival of Alvair.

After her eighteenth birthday, Alexa’s quiet existence becomes tumultuous, and she realizes she does not need to seek to find adventure. Myths become real, legend becomes fact, and Alexa discovers that she possesses rare abilities which make her a target for both sides in a centuries-old struggle for power. She must use every resource available to her—including her talents with the supernatural Amulets— to help her friends, rekindle her romance with Caleb, and save her island home from destruction.

My Review

Alexa is confined by law and her guardian to live within the confines of the kingdom of Alvair until she turns eighteen. But she is more than ready to explore the world outside the kingdom. Ivy is the overprotective guardian who has done everything to prepare Alexa for her very uncertain future, but Alexa doesn't know it. She doesn't see the point in all the studies and the sword fighting. She just want's to be a young woman, hang with her friend and fall in love. Especially with the very handsome Caleb.

Caleb is a merchant sailor who specializes in finding rare artifacts. He lives for adventure and the sea, but can't get enough of Alexa. He is hooked from the minute he lays eyes on her. When Alexa is finally able to see Caleb outside the kingdom everything she has ever known comes crashing down around her as she discovers that she is a part of legend. As she discovers more about her new world Caleb too discovers her unknown history. Now Alexa is hunted for who she is and Caleb must make a choice between love and his responsibility and career.

Alexa is your typical teenager, with your typical obedience problem. In that she wants to do the exact opposite of what she's told. But what Alexa doesn't understand is that those rules are the very things that are saving her life. Alexa is stubborn, quick witted, down to earth and has a real love for history. She has true beauty and appreciates the beauty of life. But let's face it, like all teenage girls all she wants to do is meet a nice boy and fall in love. Luckily for her there's Caleb. The rugged good looking merchant sailor with an equal love of history and adventure.

Caleb specializes in finding rare artifacts, but what he doesn't realize is that Alexa is the rarest of artifacts and his main buyer would do anything to get his hands on her. And when Caleb discovers who Alexa really is he is forced to make a hard choice. Love or money. His choice may surprise you.

Amulet of Elusion is a book full of adventure, mystery, suspense and my favorite of all magic! The story of Alexa may seem like the typical YA story. Girl lives normal life to discover she is the thing of legend, but that is about where the similarities end. Amulet of Elusion provides a refreshing take on magic and gives you a world that is every bit as real as the world we live in. Katie Lynn Johnson has a vivid imagination and it shines through in her description of the world and the uses of the Amulets.

Amulets are the key to the magic in Amulet of Elusion providing the holder with power that only that Amulet can grant. They are rare and sacred. And the more Amulets you have the more powerful you are. Now imagine a power hungry guy getting a hold of more than one Amulet and you have a recipe for a successful story!

Amulet of Elusion was a very enjoyable book that provided me a great escape from the day to day world. I was completely lost in the action and thrill of the story as Alexa fought to survive and save the kingdom and those she loved. I bought it, hook, line and sinker and I can't wait to have more. I have to say that Katie Lynn Johnson really did a number on me with the ending, I was more than a little unsatisfied, I was pissed. I wanted to scream at the book and demand more. Then I realized that Katie Lynn Johnson gave me a sneak peek into Amulet of Power and I rejoiced and quickly dove in... boy was that a mistake. By the time I was done reading the sneak peek I was seething! I wanted to rip things off the wall and smack Alexa around. Now I have to get my hands on that book and so should you!

"Their relationship had become nothing short of a mind-bending mutual attraction that would have made opiate addiction seem mild in comparison." (kindle, loc. 4485).

I love this description for Alexa and Caleb's attraction to each other! I think it is absolutely fitting for these two characters.
